Manufacture of fuel briquettes from thermally processed biomass

A process for manufacturing fuel briquettes includes partially pyrolysing (12) a biomass feedstock at a temperature in the range 200°C - 300°C to produce a char. The char is conditioned (14) in a carbonisation reaction at a temperature of 300°C-450°C for forming a carbonised char product. After cooling (16) the carbonised char, it is ground (18) to less than 3mm nominal size and blended (20) with coal fines and a binder (24) before forming briquettes (28) which are subsequently cured (29).
