A device for detecting a parking space an automatic parking system (SPAS, Smart Parking Assistant System) and a method thereof for are disclosed. The device comprises: a signal preprocessing part to perform signal filtering of reflected signals returned by reflection in an edge section of ultrasonic signals projected from an ultrasonic sensor attached to a vehicle; a pattern-based edge estimating part to extract an intersection of a number of circles having a number of measured distance collected from the reflected signals according to the movement of the vehicle as a radius, estimate a reflection angle defined between a first line bisecting a sensing area within the sensing area of the ultrasonic sensor having the attachment position of the ultrasonic sensor as a reference point and a second line connecting the reference point and the intersection, and estimate edge section of the obstacle based on the estimated reflection angle; and a parking space detecting part to detect parking space of the vehicle according to the edge section estimated.
