<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an optical sensor in the housing of a printer from malfunctioning due to external light without using a shielding material which causes recording paper jam. <P>SOLUTION: A system controller 10 of the printer 1 causes conveyance devices (24, 240, 22, 220) to convey the recording paper 4 to a light-shielding position where a part of the recording paper 4 protrudes outward from a discharge port 61. After the conveyance operation, a projector 51 of the optical sensor 50 emits light, at the same time, a detection signal of a photoreceptor 52 is input, and the state of an object to be detected is determined in accordance with a level of the obtained detection signal.
