A gear casing comprises a first part 14 in which a gear train is mounted, a second part 16 adapted to be secured to a seating, and an intermediate part 15 to which parts 14 and 16 are secured, the material of the intermediate part 15 having greater sound deadening and vibration dampening properties than the material of the parts 14 and 16. Preferably, the parts 14, 16 are of mild steel or cast steel and the part 15 is of cast iron. The parts are secured together by mild steel bolts arranged in pairs alternately securing parts 14 and 16 to part 15. Three suitable bolting arrangements are disclosed, Figs. 3, 5 and 7 (not shown).
