<p>PURPOSE: A method for controlling a washing machine is provided to have an optimal condition for steam generation by partially and directly heating a space inside a duct, thereby converting supplied water into steam. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the following steps: heating a space inside a duct, which is connected to a tub of a washing machine, to have a higher temperature than other space inside the duct does (S3); directly supplying water to the heated space to generate steam (S4); providing an air flow towards the heated space so that the steam is supplied to the tub (S5); and determining the amount of water in the water supplying stage based on the degree of temperature rise for a predetermined time.
