PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston ring that applies coating characteristics to an outer peripheral surface and a side surface, maintains abrasion resistance over a long term and can suppress agglutination of aluminum between itself and a piston ring groove, and provide a manufacturing method thereof.SOLUTION: A piston ring 10 is mounted to an aluminum alloy-based piston, and slides with a cylinder liner mainly comprising Fe. In the piston ring, a hard carbon coating 3 having no hydrogen is formed on an outer peripheral surface 12a and at least one of side surfaces 12b1, 12b2; a hard carbon coating 3a formed on an outer peripheral surface has no columnar structure; and a hard carbon coating 3b formed on the side surface has a columnar structure extending in a direction crossing the side surface. |
