Timber cutting machine has cutting unit with retainers(2)(3) and projecting blades(4). Boards are initially placed in a loading station from which the topmost board is automatically transferred to a cutting station where slats are cut by a cutting unit carrying rigidly held thin cutting blades. The slats are subsequently transferred through smoothing and squaring-off devices which apply pressure to smooth both pairs of opposite sides of each slat, during which time the cutting unit is returned to its initial position and the board is advanced to permit severing of further slats.
