LOW CARIOGENIC SWEETENING AGENTS

Hernandulcin, a sesquiterpene and related compounds possess a sweetness intensity about three orders of magnitude greater than that of sucrose. These compounds are non-mutagenic and non-toxic under conventional assay procedures. In addition to attractive utility in foods, beverages and pharmaceutical compositions, these compounds afford a low-cariogenic, essentially non-nutritive sweetening agent for inclusion in oral hygiene products.
