PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head with improved abrasion resistance, and to provide a thermal printer including the thermal head. ! SOLUTION: A thermal head X1 includes: a substrate 7; electrodes 17, 19 provided on the substrate 7; a heating part 9 which is provided on the substrate 7 and is connected with the electrodes 17, 19; and a protection layer 25 which is provided on the electrodes 17, 19 and the heating part 9. The protection layer 25 includes: a first layer 25a containing silicon nitride and silicon oxynitride; and a second layer 25b provided on the first layer 25a and containing tantalum oxide and silicon carbide. !
