PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent excessive heating of a video display unit due to incidence of external light, and allow an observer wearing polarized sunglasses to visually recognize virtual images without degrading video quality of the virtual images.SOLUTION: A video display system (10) includes a projection plate (11) on which video light (L) is projected, and a video display device (12) that projects the video light (L) on the projection plate (11). The video display device (12) has a video display unit (14) that emits first video light (L1), which is linear polarized light, and a reflection type polarization member (15) that has a unique polarization reflection axis reflecting the linear polarized light. The polarization state of the first video light (L1) is other than P polarization and S polarization with respect to a first virtual surface (VF1) formed by a perpendicular of a reflection surface (28) of the reflection type polarization member (15) and the locus of the video light (L) made incident at the intersection of the reflection surface (28) and the perpendicular, and the polarization state of third video light (L4) displayed through the projection plate (11) is polarization in a direction non-parallel to the horizontal surface.
