PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a vaccine against a polypeptide toxin that originates from Clostridium perfringens.SOLUTION: The invention provides immunogenic compositions comprising a toxin, and methods for vaccinating animals, for example chickens, so that they are less susceptible to clostridial diseases. The invention also provides methods of determine whether an animal has been exposed to the toxin, polynucleotides encoding the toxin, and attenuated bacteria that express a reduced or less active form of the toxin.
