The lift (1) has two cages (2, 3) moved along a common travel path. The cages include two drives. A shaft information system determines speed and position information for the cages. A safety device (22) monitors the cages. The safety device is connected to the shaft information system. The safety device initiates a first braking measure for one of the cages when a distance between the cages falls below a safety spacing (D), predetermines a retardation plot for the cage and initiates a second braking measure for the cage when a result of the retardation plot is exceeded.
