Calibrator for a downhole caliper and method of using same

A calibrator for a caliper of a downhole tool is provided. The caliper has a caliper arm extendable from the downhole tool for taking measurements. The calibrator includes a floating ring having steps on an inner surface thereof and an outer ring for floatingly supporting the floating ring. The outer ring is positionable along the downhole tool such that the steps of the floating ring are positionable in engagement with the caliper arm for measurement thereby so that the measurements of the caliper arm may be calibrated based on a known diameter of the steps.
