PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an actuator enabling a reduction in cost and size and an energy-saving. SOLUTION: Since a ball 12 is pressed toward a recessed part 7b or 7c by the energizing force of a coiled spring 11 while the ball 12 is engaged with the recessed part 7b or 7c, to move a nut 7 in the axial direction, a force to push back the ball 12 is required. Namely, when the position of the ball 12 engaged with the recessed part 7b or 7c is taken as a shift select position, the position can be held. Accordingly, the axial position of the nut 7 can be held without using an electromagnetic clutch.
