Methods and apparatus are provided for a three-dimensional camouflage applied to the exterior of a man-made article. The camouflage comprises a surface with a visible topography defined by a predetermined arrangement of three-dimensional elements.

1. A camouflage applied to an exterior surface of a man-made object, comprising:
a first arrangement of plateaus of various sizes and shapes positioned at discrete elevation levels from a base level of the surface, the plateaus connected to one another by walls, wherein the walls and plateaus present a stepped topography; and a second arrangement of plateaus of various sizes and shapes superimposed on the first arrangement of plateaus, wherein the second arrangement of plateaus is substantially smaller in scale than the first arrangement of plateaus.
