1. A data processing system, the data processing system comprising:
a data detector circuit operable to apply a data detection algorithm to a data set to yield a detected output and an interim filtered output; a variance calculation circuit operable to calculate a variance across instances the interim filtered output; a data decoder circuit operable to apply a data decode algorithm to a decoder input derived from the detected output to yield a decoded output; and a quality based bit error rate prediction circuit operable to calculate a bit error rate output based upon a combination of the variance and a soft output.
