The device has a filling member for filling liquids into containers. A covering device covers the filling member and pivotable about a pre-set pivot axis (X) and displaceable about a pre-set displacement direction, and a drive device (10) generates a pivoting movement and a displacement movement of the covering device. The drive device is designed such that the pivoting movement and the displacement movement are partially and temporally staggered with respect to each other. A sleeve is displaceable along the pivot axis, and a guide groove is arranged in the sleeve. An independent claim is also included for a method for covering a filling element with a covering device.
