A method for operating an image display device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises the following steps of: displaying a character corresponding to a user; recognizing motion information of a given input unit; and controlling the character to perform a motion based on the recognized motion information. The image display device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a display to display the character corresponding to the user; and an interface unit to recognize the motion information of the given input unit, or a control unit to control a camera and the character to perform the motion based on the recognized motion information. As a result, by providing various types of visual feedback using the character, user convenience can be improved.
