PURPOSE: A portable terminal operated based on a touch input and a method for operating the same are provided to form a touch panel capable of controlling power and a volume at an edge of an existing portable terminal instead of a mechanical switch. CONSTITUTION: A touch panel (110) receives a touch gesture in a first input area and a second input area and generates a touch sense signal to the touch gestures. A touch sensing unit (120) generates a power supply control signal according to the touch sense signal. A power control unit (130) supplies power to a data processing unit (150) according to the power control signal. The data processing unit processes data for performing functions of the portable terminal when being supplied with power.
