<p>Provided is a method of obtaining N number of constellation ratioαfor use in transmission of a hierarchical modulation (HM) signal. The method comprises obtaining a model of the variation in a minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required to provide a receiver with a predetermined performance measure as a correlative factor of constellation ratioα; selecting N number of target SNR values; and obtaining constellation ratioαcorresponding to each of the target SNR values and obtaining N numbers ofαvalues based on the model. The performance measure may be a variable related to the quality of received signals, for example, bit error rate, packet error rate, or block error rate. An apparatus for transmitting a hierarchical modulation signal can select one of the N values obtained by the method above, and transmit the hierarchical modulation signal based on the selected constellation ratio value. An apparatus for receiving a hierarchical modulation signal can receive information for confirming one of the N values obtained by the method above, and decodes the received hierarchical modulation signal based on the confirmed constellation ratio value.</p> |
