The device (1) has a mass flow meter (4) measuring a parameter representative of mass throughput of gas flow (25) along a flow path. The flow path includes an outlet path that is located in an opening (2). A gas flow generation unit (3) generates leak gas along the outlet path. Pressure sensors (5) measure pressure of leak gas along the outlet path. The mass flow meter is arranged to measure the parameter of the mass throughput of leak gas along the outlet path. A calculation device determines size of a leak hole (22) from measurement of the parameter throughput along the outlet path. An independent claim is also included for a method for testing a sample.
