[Also in Group XXXIV] A machine tool comprises a component 5 rotatable in a head 1 at high speed, and means for circulating a cooling liquid or air in a chamber 11 surrounding at least a part of the rotatable component. The spindle 5 is rotated by a motor 7 and, in use, large quantities of heat are generated at its front bearing 6. A pump 17 delivers cooling air through a pipe 18 to a flexible conduit 19 leading to a duct 12. After passing around fins 14 on the bearing 6, the air is expelled through an insulated duct 16. A temperature probe 24 having a visual indicator 31 controls a valve 28 through a thermostat 26 to maintain an even temperature. A pressure take-off 32 modifies the operation of the thermostat. The feed motor 35 and gearboxes may also. be cooled. In a modification, a jig 36, Fig. 8, is secured to the front of the slide 1 for use in boring or grinding and plugs are removed from openings 38 to allow the cooling air also to circulate through the jig. |
