Polymers of olefins containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms are made by polymerizing one or more olefines in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting a heavy metal compound of a transition element, e.g. titanium tetrachloride, with an organometallic compound of an element of Group I to III of the Mendel</>aeeff Periodic Table, and after-treating the reaction mixture with a mixture of an aluminium trihydrocarbon and a metal fluoride. The reaction product obtained from the heavy metal compound may be heat-treated at 40 DEG -150 DEG C. prior to the after-treatment. The metal fluoride may be an alkali, alkaline, or heavy metal fluoride, such as lead fluoride. The olefin may be ethylene, propylene or butene-1. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent. The aluminium compound may be aluminium trimethyl, triethyl, tripropyl, triphenyl, tributyl, tripentyl, or trihexyl, or diethyl aluminium monochloride. |
