Improvements in carbon black manufacture

In the furnace production of carbon black in which a gas atomized liquid make hydrocarbon is injected longitudinally into the furnace from a plurality of spaced orifices and a burning gaseous or vaporous fuel is injected longitudinally into the furnace from a plurality of orifices spaced around the make hydrocarbon orifices, steam is separately introduced into the furnace between the point of introduction of the make hydrocarbon and the point at which carbon black is first produced. The separately introduced steam may be injected at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the furnace or in a downstream direction making an angle of at least 45 degrees with the longitudinal axis. The separately injected steam may be 0,5-5%, preferably 1-2%, by weight of the total reactants. As shown oil atomized in steam is injected from a plurality of longitudinally adjustable inlet nozzles 19, a mixture of fuel and air is injected from a plurality of orifices 11, and steam is injected from four orifices 33, into a cylindrical reaction chamber 1 having a primary cooler 6. The steam is preferably injected one sixth of the distance from the inlet end of the furnace to the primary cooler. Examples are given. Specification 652,518 is referred to.
