[Also in Group XXIII] The spindle bearing housing of a grinding machine is cooled by causing coolant from a conduit 23 to be deposited as a sheet over an external surface of the housing and positioning a plate 16 adjacent the surface for the purpose of shielding the surface and condensing the coolant vaporized thereby. A spindle 14 is carried in bearings 12 in the housing 11 from a wall of which is spaced the plate 16, secured by studs 17 and spacers 18. Side flanges 20, insulated by rubber strips, form, with the plate a chamber 22 extending entirely over the side wall of the housing, this chamber being closed at the top and open at the bottom to allow condensed coolant to fall to a collecting gutter for recirculation by the supplying pump.
