[Also in Group IX] A web or assembly of spaced parallel nylon threads or cords (with or without transverse threads) is subjected to two or more stretching operations at a temperature in excess of 200‹ F., one or another of such operations being preceded by dipping the web &c. in a " cord-torubber " bonding agent under low tension, to reduce the elongation of the cords and increase their " dimensional stability ", i.e. the tendency to retain a constant elongation under varying load and temperature conditions. In one embodiment, a web &c. is passed through a dipping apparatus which applies bonding agent (aqueous solution) or adhesive by immersion or contact with coating rollers under a low tension permitting shrinkage of the cords; the web is heated e.g. at a temperature of 240‹ F. to 370‹ F., to dry the cords and set the bonding agent and stretched, under increased tension, e.g. 0.6 to 0.8 grms. per denier, to effect a substantial increase in length, e.g. 6 per cent; the web is allowed to cool to room temperature and again stretched by an additional amount, e.g. 5-12 per cent, at a temperature approximating the melting point, e.g. 425‹ F. of the cords for a short time, e.g. 36-24 seconds, and finally cooled. Specification 690,165 is referred to.</p> |
