The invention relates to a method for producing a diaryl carbonate and gaseous hydrogen chloride from molten monohydroxy aromatics and phosgene in the presence of at least one catalyst and without adding an additional solvent, the gaseous hydrogen chloride having a purity in excess of 99.0 % by weight. The invention is characterised in that the gaseous hydrogen chloride that has been formed is subjected to at least one purification measure in order to remove the by-products, said measure being selected from the group comprising condensation, scrubbing or distillation.
