Provided is a matrix converter comprising: a plurality of bidirectional switches which is configured to be provided between phases of an alternating current (AC) power supply and phases of a rotational machine, and each of which has at least one first directional switching element for allowing a current flow from the rotational machine to the AC power supply and at least one second directional switching element for allowing a current flow from the AC power supply to the rotational machine; and a controller which is configured to perform power conversion control between the AC power supply and the rotational machine by controlling the bidirectional switches. The controller includes: a first drive control unit configured to perform the power conversion control by simultaneously turning on both of the first directional switching element and the second directional switching element in at least one of the bidirectional switches; and a second drive control unit configured to perform the power conversion control by turning on one of the first directional switching element and the second directional switching element in each of two or more of the bidirectional switches.
