This liquid crystal display device is provided with: a first substrate and a second substrate; a liquid crystal layer which is held between the first substrate and the second substrate and contains a liquid crystal material; and a polymer layer for controlling the alignment of liquid crystal molecules, said polymer layer being formed on the first substrate and/or the second substrate. The first substrate has a first electrode. The polymer layer is formed by polymerizing one or more kinds of radically polymerizable monomers that are added into the liquid crystal layer, and at least one kind of the radically polymerizable monomers is a compound that is represented by P-Sp1-Z2-A1-(Z1-A2)n1-Z3-Sp2-P. (In the formula, P represents a radically polymerizable group; each of Sp1 and Sp2 represents an alkylene group or the like, or a direct bond; A1 represents a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group or the like; A2 represents a phenylene group or the like; Z1, Z2 and Z3 may be the same or different and each represents an -O- group, an -NH- group, a -CO- group, a -COO- group, an -OCO- group, an -NRCO- group, a -CONR- group or the like, or a direct bond, provided that at least one of Z1, Z2 and Z3 represents an -NRCO- group or a -CONR- group; R represents a hydrogen atom or a linear alkyl group or alkenyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms; and n1 represents 0 or 1.) |
