Alkali metal aluminium alkoxy hydrides of the general formula MnAlHx(OR)4 where M can be Na, K, Rb or Cs, and R is an organic hydrocarbon radical, namely alkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, which may be substituted by tertiary amino groups or by etherified hydroxylic groups, where n is 1 or 3, x and y are integers such that their sum is n + 3, are prepared by the reaction, in an inert organic medium, of aluminium, the alcoholates of alkali metals and hydrogen at superatmospheric pressures, e.g. 10 to 500 atmospheres, and at elevated temperatures, e.g. 75 DEG to 300 DEG C. Preferred organic media are aliphatic, aromatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, ethers or tertiary amines. A promoter which can be a hydride, or metal-organic compound or an alkoxide of A1 may also be present. The most preferred alkoxides are NaOMe, KOMe, NaOisoPr, NaOtertBn, NaOn-Bn, NaOCH2Ph, NaOPh. The Specification includes in the list of starting materials (M = alkali metal) M-O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3, M-O-CH2-CH2-N(CH3)2 <FORM:1064654/C2/1> The promoters listed in the Specification refer to the hydrides, organometallic compounds and alkoxides of A1, B and Zn and it is stated that the presence of a little free alcohol or of an alkyl halide is advantageous. In the examples are described the preparation of Na3[AlH5(OCH)3], Na3[AlH4(OCH3)2], Na3[Al-H3)3] with Na[Al(OCH3)4] by-product, K3[AlH2(OCH3)4], K3[AlH3(OCH3)3], Na3[AlH2(OC3H7)4], Na3[AlH(OC3H7)5], Na[AlH2(OC4H9)2], Na[AlH(OC4H9)3], Na[AlH3(OC4H9)], the sodium aluminium phenylethylate hydrides and phenoxide hydrides. |
