Detergent compositions, particularly washing-up and laundry compositions, comprise unsaturated sulphonic acids and salts of formula where R and R1 are each H or a C1-21 hydrophobic organic group which may contain substituents, the arithmetic sum of the number of carbon atoms in R plus R1 being 7 to 21, M is H, NH4 or an alkali or alkaline earth metal, including Mg, and x is the valence of M. The usual anionic, nonionic or ampholytic surfactants, builders, anti-redeposition agents, optical brighteners and bleaching agents may be present.ALSO:The invention comprises unsaturated sulphonic acids and salts of formula where R and R1 are each H or a C1- 21 hydrophobic organic group, the arithmetic sum of the number of carbon atoms in R plus R1 being 7 to 21, M is H, NH4 or an alkali or alkaline earth metal, including Mg, and x is the valence of M. The sulphonic acids are preferably prepared by reacting an olefinic compound of formula R-CH2-CH = CHR1, preferably dissolved in a neutral, anhydrous solvent, with SO3 or a complex of SO3 with a nitrogen-free organic substance at a temperature below 15 DEG C., and decomposing the resulting sultone by warming above 15 DEG C., preferably in the presence of a Lewis base solvent. Alternatively R-CH = CH-CHBrR1 may be reacted with a bisulphite. The salts are prepared by neutralizing the acids.
