Provided are a novel production method and production intermediate for an herbicide. Provided are the following: with respect to a trifluoromethanesulfonanilide-type herbicide represented by formula (2): [in the formula, A denotes -CH=CH- or a sulfur atom, R1 denotes a hydrogen atom or a C1-C12 alkoxycarbonyl, and Q denotes a cyclic compound such as a lactam or morpholin-3-one], an industrially useful production method that uses an oxidizing agent; a trifluoromethanesulfinyl compound that is useful as an intermediate in the production method; and a method for producing the trifluoromethanesulfinyl compound.
