PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an asbestos detoxification method which can surely detoxify crocidolite, amosite and the like adhering to a building and the like to enable reuse of the treated product as a resource.SOLUTION: An asbestos detoxification method comprises: a scattering prevention step of an asbestos-containing material where the asbestos-containing material is impregnated with water; a peeling-off step of the asbestos-containing material having been subjected to the scattering prevention step; an alkali treatment step of carrying out impregnation reaction of the peeled-off asbestos-containing material with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide; an acid treatment step of adding an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid to the alkali treated product to carry out reaction; and a step of neutralization with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or an aqueous solution of sodium silicate.
