[Also in Divisions A4 and B7] In the manufacture of inflatable garment parts such as sleeves 14 of an inflatable suit, two plies of fabric coated with unvulcanized rubber are separated except at their peripheral region by a perforated sheet 3 of material such as cellulose nitrate which will prevent the plies from adhering together during vulcanization. The perforated sheet is preferably precoated with contact adhesive on one face and initially carries a stiff backing sheet 4 on the other face. To form a series of sleeves, pieces of perforated cellulose nitrate sheet, each cut to an outline 14 which is slightly smaller than the finished sleeve and each including an airway 6, are adhered to a rubber-coated fabric ply 1 and their backing sheets 4 are removed. The second ply (7), Fig. 2 (not shown) is imposed on the ply 1 with a rubber inflation tube (11), Fig. 3 (not shown) adhesively secured in each extension 6 and the assembly is vulcanized for half an hour whilst the temperature rises to 265‹F. and for one hour at 265‹F. Vulcanization takes place only through the perforations 5 and around the edges of the sheet 3 and sleeves having a vulcanized margin are cut out. |
