Provided is a method for operating a direct current (DC) power transmission device including an improved method capable of detecting an extinction angle by measuring the voltage of both ends of a thyristor and directly measuring the extinction angle , and calculating the extinction angle by measuring voltage once. To that end, provided is the method for operating a DC power transmission device with n number of thyristors, which comprises the steps of: applying a current to a thyristor after the thyristor is randomly selected among n number of thyristors, and measuring the voltage when reverse voltage is applied to both ends of the thyristor; and calculating an extinction angle using the measured voltage only.
