The engine (1) has an air inlet collector (8), an exhaust collector (17), and a set of cylinders (2.1-2.4), where each cylinder comprises a combustion chamber (5.1-5.4). An exhaust gas recirculation pipe (22) reinjects part of exhaust fumes output from the chambers of the cylinders inside the air inlet collector. A catalyst (33) i.e. water gas shift reaction type catalyst, is installed on the path of the pipe to transform a mixture of water and carbon monoxide into hydrogen. A water injector nozzle is installed upstream of the catalyst. An independent claim is also included for a method for production of hydrogen.
