PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a display that has high display utilization efficiency of a liquid crystal layer, high contrast and a high speed in a liquid crystal display device utilizing the liquid crystal layer exhibiting a kerr effect.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device comprises: a flat plate-like support substrate; a plurality of first electrodes arranged on a surface of the support substrate; second electrodes formed one by one among respective ones of the plurality of first electrodes on the surface of the support substrate; a counter substrate 20 arranged opposite to the surface of the support substrate on which the first electrodes and the second electrodes are formed; and a liquid crystal layer 30 that is held between the support substrate and the counter substrate and exhibits a Kerr effect. When a mean width among the first electrodes and the second electrodes in an arrangement direction is represented by L, a mean distance among the first electrodes and the second electrodes adjacent to one another is represented by S and a distance between the support substrate and the counter substrate is represented by D, L, S and D satisfy an expression of 0.7≤D/(L+S)≤2. |
