The conditioning unit has two or more conditioning rollers (12) operating in opposite directions and having partial sections producing peaks and valleys. Each partial section (19) is formed as a rotationally symmetrical body having a larger diameter on one side than on the other. The partial sections forming one roller adjoins with their large side faces (22') the small side faces (23) of the adjoining partial sections. The circumferential faces (24) of the partial sections of opposing rollers have a gap between each other which is smaller than the grains contained in the chopped material. The large side faces of the sections of interacting rollers form a cutting gap (27) at least in some areas. The circumferential faces of the partial sections can have serrated profiles.
