The cable length sensor (10) comprises a housing (14) accommodating a rotatably mounted cable drum (16) on which a measuring cable (18) is wound. A rotation-rate sensor is provided to detect the number of rotations of the drum. A return actuator (20) is provided for the cable drum to unwound measuring cable wound back onto the cable drum. An eddy current brake (12) is provided for braking the drum in case of malfunction and/or improper operation. The eddy current brake is equipped with a stator and a rotor unit.
