Improvements in the manufacture of artificial threads, filaments, and formations of cellulose ethers and esters

[Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Tinted solid or inflated threads, filaments, , films, monofils, and other articles obtained from cellulose esters or ethers including cellulose acetate have incorporated therewith an unpurified coloured or/and purified white highly refractive, high-boiling halogenated diarylamine having a high melting point preferably above 100‹C. for imparting a diminished lustre to the materials. Chlorine, bromine, or iodine compounds may be used. The halogen compound may be obtained by passage of halogen through the liquid diarylamine, or by halogenation of the diarylamine dissolved in alcohol or other solvent. The halogen compounds used may be odourless or may have a floral aroma. The delustrant may be dispersed in the spinning solution provided it is only sparingly soluble in the acetone or other solvent used, or it may be used in the form of a salt, e.g., an acid-reacting salt which is dispersed in the spinning solution. In this case the salt is decomposed during or subsequently to spinning by an alkaline treatment. The salts may be dispersed alone or together with an acid-reacting salt of a watersoluble amine or amide or with an alkyl or terpenyl sulphate or pyrosulphate of barium or lead. The spinning solution may also contain an oleate of potassium, barium, or lead. Halogenated diphenylamine, ditolylamine or dibenzylamine, or a mixture of polychlor mono- and di-#-naphthyl benzidines, or a tetrachlor methyl diphenylamine may be used. Salts of these compounds with hydrochloric, sulphuric, or tungstic acid may be used. Amide or amine salts which may be used additionally include aniline hydrochloride, guanidine sulphate, aniline hydrogen tartrate or citrate. The alkaline treatment may be effected with bicarbonates, organic carbonates, ethanolic magnesium hydroxide, or aqueous barium hydroxide. The filaments may become inflated when treatment is effected with a carbonate. Tetrabromdiphenylamine, or polychlor-##1-dinaphthylamine may be dispersed directly in the solvent employed. In an example, tetrabrom-diphenylamine hydrobromide is dispersed in an acetpne solution of cellulose acetate. The solution is dry spun and the pinkish thread is treated with sodium bicarbonate. In another example, a coloured halogenated diarylamine and a sulphate of a water soluble amide or amine is dispersed in a cellulose ether solution which is then spun into a solution of barium hydroxide. Specification 517,886 is referred to. The Provisional Specification comprises also the use of aryl or aralkyl amides or amines, e.g. diaryl guanidines and dialkyl diaryl ureas as delustring substances.
