PURPOSE: Spatiotemporal color brightness dithering techniques are provided to reduce a brightness difference between a pixel having the minimum brightness and a pixel having the maximum brightness by dispersing color changes over multiple pixels. CONSTITUTION: A source image is disassembled into color components of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) which correspond to each pixel (78). An individual color component source image group is generated (84). First most significant bit (MSB) and least significant bit (LSB) matrices are generated (86). A dither pattern is selected from multiple dither patterns by using the LSB matrix (92). A modification matrix is generated by using the selected dither pattern and the LSB matrix (94). A second MSB matrix is generated by adding the modification matrix to the first MSB matrix (98).
