PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer recording medium that has high transfer sensitivity in both a low density portion and high density portion during high-speed printing, can achieve reduction of the amount of dye to be used in a dye layer, can suppress the occurrence of wrinkles caused by printing, does not generate printing defects, and has excellent runnability.SOLUTION: A thermal transfer recording medium includes a heat-resistant lubricating layer 40 formed on one surface of a substrate 10, an undercoat layer 20 and a dye layer 30 which are sequentially stacked on the other surface of the substrate 10. The undercoat layer is formed from an undercoat layer-forming coating solution that contains a polyvinyl alcohol and thermally conductive fine particles, and the thermal conductivity of the undercoat layer is 1.0 to 5.0 W/(m×K). The dye layer is formed from a dye layer-forming coating solution that contains an anthraquinone compound as a heat transferable dye. The average value α of the surface roughness of the heat-resistant lubricating layer is 0.05 to 0.40 μm, the average value &bgr; of the surface roughness of the heat-resistant lubricating layer after being left to stand under conditions of 150°C for 10 minutes is 0.00 to 0.70 μm, and the difference between the average value α and the average value &bgr; is 0.00 to 0.30 μm. |
