The invention relates to a process for the purification of aniline produced by gas phase hydrogenation of nitrobenzene by fractional condensation of the crude reaction product, which is produced in gaseous form, into n condensation stages with successively reducing condensation temperature, distillation of some or all of the condensates (the partial condensates PKi) present in the condensation stages 1 to (n-1) to give a distilled product PKD, combining the distilled condensate PKD with at least, preferably exclusively, the organic fraction of the nth condensate (the total condensate TK) and, if present, with at least some of the remaining undistilled partial condensates PKi, and extraction of the thus obtained product mixture with an aqueous base solution.
