A method for manufacturing foam door masking tapes having a body part 12 and a detachable section 13, comprising the step of crush welding a double layer tape 11 along a weld line 14 parallel to an edge of the tape and spaced from that edge by the thickness of the tape. The double layer tape is preferably a single tape folded in two. A weld line may be made near the fold edge to form detachable a circular bead 13 having a diameter substantially equal to the thickness of the tape. Alternatively, or additionally, a weld line may be made proximate the opposite edge to form a masking tape with a pair of removable splayed strips 13. Most preferably, an additional weld line is made centrally between the two welded edges enabling the tape to be divided. Two separate masking tapes for automobile painting or refinishing are thereby formed from a single rolling process.
