PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission system where a mode in which initial settings of a transceiver for estimating the state of an optical signal is made using a known signal and a mode in which data is transferred are switched to improve transmission quality.SOLUTION: An optical receiver for receiving an optical signal transmitted from an optical transmitter through an optical transmission path includes: a signal receiving part for receiving an optical signal from the optical transmitter and converting the received optical signal into an electrical signal; a signal demodulation part for demodulating a reception signal from the known signal of the signal which is converted into the electrical signal and estimating a state parameter of the reception signal to output it; a known signal generation part for generating a known signal which has the same pattern as the known pattern of the received known signal; a bit error rate calculation part for calculating a bit error rate on the basis of the signal output from the signal demodulation part and the known signal output from the known signal generation part; and a mode determination part for determining a processing state of the signal demodulation part by the bit error rate output from the bit error rate calculation part and outputting the signal which indicates the processing state.
