The light curtain (1) has an arrangement of transmitters (5) that emit light rays (4). An arrangement of receivers (6) receives the light rays. A central control unit (9) generates object detection signal based on the signals present at the output of the receivers. An arrangement of computing units includes port lines (8) that are coupled to the transmitters and the receivers for activating the transmitters and receivers. The computing units freely select the points in time for activating individual transmitters and receivers. An independent claim is included for a method of detecting objects within monitored region with light curtain.
