<p>A support assembly comprising an elongate tubular support member 12 of uniform cross-section, the support member including a plurality of longitudinal formations 18 to receive fastening means 30 to mount the support member to a foundation or base 14, a longitudinal indent 22 being provided in an outer surface of the support member adjacent each longitudinal formation, whereby in the event of a collision with the support member, the indents promote failure at or adjacent a longitudinal formation or formations. The support assembly is suitable for mounting a traffic sign, gantry or any other roadside equipment and can reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident. The indents may be substantially V-shaped. The support member may be extruded from aluminium. The assembly may also comprise a base plate, which may be formed from galvanised steel, and fastening means, preferably bolts, including a weakened part to encourage sheering in the event of contact from a vehicle.</p> |
