PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display device capable of performing image expression with a higher brightness and contrast with respect to a video signal while reducing the brightness and contrast when displaying a video obtained from a Web site, etc.SOLUTION: The image display device comprises: a display section 8; a backlight section 6; a control section that controls the display section 8 and the backlight section 6 (a signal processing section 1, an area active control/brightness stretching section 4); and a video type determination section 14. Responding to a determination result of the video type determination section 14, the control section executes or terminates a light-emitting portion enhancement processing. In the light-emitting portion enhancement processing, a histogram in which a predetermined feature amount on the brightness of an input video signal is multiplied by the number of pixels is created and an upper area is detected in a predetermined range of the histogram as a light emitting portion. The display brightness in the light emitting area is enhanced by stretching and increasing the brightness of the backlight section 6 and by reducing the brightness of the video signal in a non-light emitting part excluding the light emitting part in the input video signals. |
