The method involves integrating field devices (10) in an engineering system (1) through appropriate device drivers (5). One of the device drivers assigned with an auxiliary function, which is utilized for extending driver functions of the device driver such that information of the field device is exchanged through an interface (8) of a plant asset management system (7). The device driver assigned with the auxiliary function is an interpreter driver i.e. interpreter device type manager (DTM). The device driver is extended without causing any change to the auxiliary function.
