PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly increase the number of focus detection points.

SOLUTION: The focus detector includes: first focus detection means 108 which includes an image pickup device 212 used both for imaging and for detecting a focus and including a pixel column for detecting the focus, calculates phase difference information of a pair of images by using a signal which is an output signal imaged by the image pickup device 212 through a photographic optical system 210 and is a signal from the pixel column for detecting a focus and detects a focus adjustment state by the photographic optical system 210 on the basis of the phase difference information; and second focus detection means 109 which is provided separately from the first focus detection means 108 and detects a focus adjustment state by the photographic optical system 210 on the basis of phase difference information of a pair of images obtained by a pair of light fluxes for detecting a focus passing different areas of the photographic optical system 210. The second focus detection means 109 acquires phase difference information based on the pair of light fluxes for detecting a focus corresponding to a prescribed area in a photographic screen while the first focus detection means 108 calculates phase difference information by using the signal which is present at a position corresponding to an area different from the prescribed area in the photographic screen and is from the pixel column for detecting a focus on the image pickup device 212.
